Energy Related Research: This research theme is focused on increasing the environmentally sustainable use of fossil fuels via carbon capture and storage (CCS). Our research group has developed geochemical techniques to trace the movement and the fate of CO2 injected into geological reservoirs at demonstration and pilot sites in Canada. Using chemical and isotopic techniques graduate students Emberley, Raistrick, Nightingale and Johnson have demonstrated that carbon isotope techniques are an effective tool to trace the movement and the dissolution of CO2 in deep saline brines of depleted oilfields, while oxygen isotope ratios of CO2 and reservoir H2O can be used to assess pore-space saturation with CO2. These innovative isotope approaches are critically important for verifying storage of CO2 thereby contributing to a reduction of Canada’s CO2 emissions in the future.
